'Dumsor' cost Ghana nearly Gh¢1b in 2014 – ISSER

Image result for Dumsor Ghana lost between Gh¢320 million and Gh¢924 million in 2014 alone due to the ongoing power crisis, a report by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) has revealed.

The 2014 Social Development Outlook said this amounts to between 2% and 6% percent of GDP annually and does not include direct cost.

The Coordinator of the research, Rev. Dr. Adobea Yaa Owusu, touching on the highlights, described the power situation as a “major bottleneck hampering Ghana’s development” and noted it has debilitating impact on growth and development.

Rev. Dr Owusu further observed that the continuous fumes from generators used as alternatives for power generation in the country also affects the environment because of the carcinogenic material in it which could cause throat cancer and also has psychological effects.

According to the report, about 30% of the Ghanaian population do not have access to electricity.

Ghana is currently experiencing a painful load-shedding exercise following three years of erratic power supply.

The power problem has affected most companies including health facilities.

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has complained that the load-shedding exercise is affecting their businesses, lamenting that the situation had made some companies lay off some of its workers.

But government has assured that it is putting measures in place including importing emergency power barges to save the situation.

Shatta Wale storms James Town on VGMA night

Shatta Wale storms James Town on VGMA night

Shattawale Watches (2)
Shatta Wale, Ghana’s biggest crowd-pulling musician, will stage a mega concert at James Town in Accra this Saturday, the same day slated for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). Already there are split opinions as to whether the concert is a ‘homecoming’ event or one meant to steal the shine off the VGMA.

The concert, planned for Shatta Beach behind the Usher Fort at James Town in Accra, has become the talk of town and has generated huge excitement among Shatta’s fans along the coastal towns on that stretch of the capital city.

His manager, Bull Dog, told NEWS-ONE Saturday’s concert was not planned to coincide with the VGMA and that the event was part of a nationwide tour of ghettos, slums and neighbourhoods Shatta Wale would be embarking on this year.

“Basically the timing was coincidental. The Shatta Beach was opened a few weeks ago in honour of Shatta Wale and the youth and elders in the neighbourhood came to see us to inform us officially. So the team thought it wise to bless the place for them… Due to our travel schedule, we decided to do the concert this weekend and we all happened to have settled on Saturday afternoon,” Bull Dog explained.

Bull Dog explained further that Shatta Wale was about leaving Ghana to continue his tour of the UK and USA and wanted to clear this event as quickly as possible. He said Shatta partly comes from James Town and therefore sees the invitation as a ‘homecoming’ event.

The Shatta Beach was hitherto an abandoned site that had become a refuse dump site where folks illegally used as a place of convenience.

The community youth recently cleaned up the place and contributed money to refurbish the entire environs to make it clean for swimming. They also got life guards to make sure people who went there to swim were safe.

For the past weeks, the place has been the toast of the community’s youth who organise themselves at weekends to hold entertainment events there.

I have never seen Efya smoke – Nana Adwoa Awindor

I have never seen Efya smoke – Nana Adwoa Awindor

Efyamamamama
Nana Adwoa Awindor, mother of talented Ghanaian songstress Efya has debunked rumours that her daughter smokes stressing she has never seen her in the act before.

The music career of Efya, born Jane Awindor, has been rocked with series of controversies and allegations since hitting the limelight after emerging third in the maiden edition of the Stars of the Future music reality show in 2006.

Major among the controversies are allegations that she smokes and she is also into hard drugs but the mother, who is Development Queenmother of Afigya-Kwabre District, is urging Ghanaians to be circumspect in their judgement about her daughter.

According to her, it is not fair to concoct stories about her daughter with no evidence.

“You need to know, you need to see it, you need to appreciate it. If you don’t have the information you don’t go peddling it,” Nana Adwoa Awindor stressed.

She noted that, “I have not seen my daughter smoking before… so how can I go tell people she does? So if people haven’t seen it and I have asked a lot people ‘have you talking about it, seen her doing something like that before?’ If you say yes, then fine you have seen it, I haven’t so I don’t have to go peddling it.”

The host of the late television show Greetings From Abroad urged instead that Ghanaians should be protective rather “than destroy” people.

She revealed that, her daughter “is gifted. She is gifted from the onset she started singing publicly around two years when we used to give her microphones to sing at birthdays.”

The Queenmother said she has no qualms about her daughter’s musical career path noting that she absolutely supports her 100% in what she does. “Your job as a parent is to guide,” she added.

While admitting that stories about drugs is normal in the entertainment industry, Nana Adwoa Awindor observed that “I don’t think we should be doing that. Showbiz is for people to show what talent God has given them.”

“So if somebody dedicates his or her life to be in show business just to entertain us…we should be there for the people as well but within the show business you realise that there is competition there is so much of those squabbles and so some of the stories are created within…and of course our media loves [negative stories] and so sometimes they take it up and blow it beyond proportion,” she lamented.

She added that, considering the fact that the world is now a global village, Ghanaians should know that, Efya “is a young girl who has hit international [stage] so if we are talking about her and we are not careful and we are using our local squabbles to say ill things about her, we should be careful because this is somebody we are introducing and we have been able to push out there to represent Ghana in so many ways.”

Efya has several awards to her credit. She was adjudged Best Female Vocal Performance for the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions of the Ghana Music Awards.

Mahama summons Mutala over conspiracy claims

Mahama summons Mutala over conspiracy claims

Murtala Mohammed Nanton MP
The Presidency has summoned the Deputy Trade Minister Mutala Mohammed over his tirade on social media that some government officials are plotting to unseat him.

He later alleged on social media that a Cabinet Minister has hired a lady to access nude pictures of another cabinet minister.

Mutala is yet to mention names but President Mahama has invited him to explain his claims.

The Nanton lawmaker on Thursday wrote on his Facebook wall that: “I ask those sycophantic elements to ask the said MP whether it is ethical to buy a tablet and a mobile phone for a lady friend of a colleague cabinet Minister to get nude pictures of that colleague of his, available WhatsApp messages, text messages and audio.

“Those sycophants have no idea where they r dragging him to. They should not push me.”

“I observed with regrettable coyness de numerous comments made on social media as well as on radio about my comments on Radio Diamond. Some of de comments are made by people who genuinely care for the truth and some unfortunately motivated by reasons known to their consciences. I had no doubt in mind that my comments were certainly going to provoke the kind of debate it provoked.

“For those who r genuinely hurt by my comments I sincerely apologise to them. But for de said MP and those who think like him, I have no apology for them not now n not ever.”

Ataa Ayi questions fairness of Justice for All Programme

Ataa Ayi Prison
Ghana’s most famous convicted armed robber, Ataa Ayi, believes the Justice for All Programme, instituted to decongest the prisons, is discriminatory.

Born Ayi Ayittey, the convicted robber thinks it is unfair how the Programme only shows leniency to remand prisoners but not convicted ones like himself.

Ataa Ayi, who is the national leader of prisoners in the country is currently serving 160 years at the Ankaful Maximum security prisons in the Cape Coast, the Central Region capital.

"If I may ask, what is the meaning of 'Justice for All'? If someone says justice for all, it means if you in prison you also [a part of the potential beneficiaries].

"Sometimes I don't understand why they say justice for all but they will come only for the remand prisoners and we the convicts they don't care about us", he said.

The notorious armed robber turned church leader at the maximum security correctional facility is asking administrators of the programme to take a second look at how it is conducted.

"We are also pleading with the government that [it] should see to that issue for us. We are not forcing them, but we are pleading", he said.

The Justice for All Programme, funded by the UK government's Department for International Development (DFID), supports reform of the justice sector. The programme focuses on building the capacity, accountability and responsiveness of key policing justice and anti-corruption institutions and supporting them to work together, alongside civil society and oversight institutions , as part of a coherent, coordinated sector.

MP accuses Fmr Ambassador of contracting Malam to kill him

MP accuses Fmr Ambassador of contracting Malam to kill him

Kwasi Ameyaw Kyeremeh
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East, Kwasi Ameyaw—Kyeremeh, has accused an aspirant in the upcoming parliamentary primaries in the constituency, George Kumi, of plotting to kill him.

The sitting MP said on Adom Midday News on Friday that the former Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria and Libya has contracted a Malam from Savelugu in the Northern Region to ‘eliminate him’ from this world.

“The Malam known as Alhaji Musah was brought from Savelugu to Sunyani to perform rituals on me to either kill me or cause the delegates to forget me so that he can win the Parliamentary primaries…,” he alleged.

The NPP opened nominations for its members to pick forms and contest Parliamentary primaries to be organized in all 275 constituencies on June 13, 2015.

The intense competition between the two political rivals in the same party has led to accusations and counter-accusations including plots to kill one another.

Hon Ameyaw-Kyeremeh alleges that the Malam demanded various items including a black cat, black dog and the foetus of an animal.

All these items, he said, would have been used to perform rituals on him to ensure he does not win the upcoming primaries.

“But I am not afraid of juju because I believe in God…” he said.

But the former Diplomat maintained in an interview that he has not taken any such step, insisting that the MP was only running away from his shadows.

“I'm a Catholic who also believes in God so why would I do such a thing…for what purpose and to achieve what interest…I am sure he has Malaria and does not know what he is saying…,” he replied.

He added that the MP is making the allegations in a bid to find an excuse for his impending loss in the upcoming primaries.

Hon. Ameyaw-Kyeremeh however insists he would produce strong evidence to back his claim.

“If he dares me, I will produce strong evidence for the world to know his evil machinations…,” he said.

He further threatened to name the people involved in the scheme, insisting that he has the car number of the vehicle they used to transport the Malam and who he is currently staying with.
